Is it the nature of things (or simply me and my itchy feet?) that just as I have (semi-happily) settled into my newest environment that I should suddenly find ahead of me a tantalizing new horizon? Its confirmation awaits the final details … stay tuned until after the holidays on this one!
Meanwhile, 2016 – an annus horribilis for me in many ways – is nearing an end. The year started in a fine way, with a trip to Bogota and Cartagena, Colombia, followed soon after by a much-needed solo trip to Nicaragua. Things were looking good – back-to-back Latino-flavored trips in my favorite kind of weather – warm!
Unfortunately, the latter getaway was bookended by (much) less relaxing journeys to take care of my ailing mother. February/March followed up with a relocation from long-time home Chicago to less-than-eagerly-anticipated Washington, DC., and the beginning of multiple back-and-forth drives between those two cities, usually with elderly dog in tow, for the next few months.
I did get a few kicks out of hoodwinking many of you for April Fool’s Day, and I also escaped to Aspen, Colorado, for a glorious string of days in the mountains, even as I struggled with sleeplessness (so not me!) in a bad bed, myriad frustrations in a tiny apartment with non-functional appliances, and a decline in health and fitness in my new urban lifestyle.
Summer brought another series of trips to and from the new DC residence, the old house in Illinois, and the parents’ house in Pennsylvania, but again, the stress of this peripatetic lifestyle, and worries about aging parents and dog, were salved by one of the most amazing trips of my lifetime – to Mongolia – chronicled in an embarrassment of posts in August. Two little side trips to Seoul rounded out that month quite nicely!
I bitched about DC more than I should have (in spite of landing a great new job at American University), lived vicariously through my daughter and her stint in Ghana this fall, and then finally came to terms with Washington by late autumn, just in time to contemplate leaving for greener pastures!
I plan to enjoy my family and our soon-to-be-listed home in Chicago over the holidays and just afterward, I will pop into Cuba for a week before facing head-on the next wave of changes about to wash over me. It’s all good – this time I’m up for the ride! Can’t wait to tell you more about it!
Can’t wait to hear more about it!

Oooh, I’m in suspense. You must be relieved that your annus horribilus (haha) is nearly in the rearview mirror. But boy did this year go fast. Cuba though! You can’t imagine how beyond jealous I am. What a fantastic way to start the new year. 🙂

The year did go fast in many ways, but it was still so hateful at some times that it didn’t seem quite fast enough! I just realized I forgot to add Seoul to my list of 2016 destinations – ridiculous! – but probably because it was part of the bigger Mongolia trip. Oops, I’ll have to fix that. I’m psyched for Cuba!

Fabulous! 2016 has been an intense year (both good and bad) for many of us. Have a delightful holiday and a vibrant trip to Cuba. 🎄🎅🏻

Thanks! “Intense” is a good way to describe much of the past year for me (and many others, at least here in the U.S.). At least I am feeling much happier about my personal circumstances these days, and I am very excited about the trip to Cuba with my daughter!

Yep, I’m on the move again! This time I’m feeling excitement versus dread, and my mom and dog and kids and the rest of my life seem a little more stable now, too, making a move what it should be – an exciting time! Enjoy all your holidays, too!

Well it sounds like a very full year, if not always wonderful. So good to hear you’re coming through the horribilis to the other side. Looking forward to what comes next.

I was actually surprised when I looked back and saw that I still did a fair amount of fun travels this past year. It’s felt so gloomy, but I guess I was not focusing on all the good stuff. Time to adjust the attitude and the perspective a bit!

Wow I think I may be a bit dizzy just reading about your year! Sending good wishes for whatever is coming your way in 2017. By the way your Mongolia posts were some of my favorites articles of 2016 on the blogosphere.

Thanks, Sue! I’m happy to be moving on in some ways and look forward to new adventures in 2017! Thanks for your kind comments about my Mongolia series of posts. It was just such a unique trip and I couldn’t seem to stop writing about different aspects of it! Have a great end of year, happy holidays, and happy new year!

Ooh exciting! Looking forward to seeing what life has in store for you for 2017. “Tantalizing new horizons” is a great way of putting it and of keeping us all in great suspense….
I just loved your posts on Mongolia, they were fasinating and you are the only person I “know” who has travelled there! You did get in a lot of travel this year! Enjoy Cuba, we loved it for two years in a row over Christmas and New Years and wrote extensively about it both times.

Oh, I will go check your blog for Cuba posts this instant! I seem to have a tradition of kicking off the year in a Spanish-speaking country – haha. Thanks for the nice comment on the Mongolia posts; it was truly the trip of a lifetime and I certainly wrote about a lot of it. Thanks for sticking with it!

It does seem like even in a challenging year there are bright spots, looks like you had enough annus magna to balance out the annus horribilis. Sounds like next year will be off to a good start, and your mystery doesn’t sound awful so far…

You’re right! And 2017 is, so far, shaping up to have more of the bright spots than horrible ones!

Can’t wait to wait until after the holidays to hear the news — I can feel the excitement already! 2016 has been crazy, but a lot of good things did happen. Hopefully we’ll see more of the latter in 2017.

As I mentioned to someone else, going back through my blog to see where I’d been this past year made me realize my year was not quite as awful as I always think of it in my mind! There were so many good trips in there. And I may have a whole new geography to explore soon!

Lex, I’m glad to see you ending a year on a positive note – and with some tantalizing good news to boot! Part of me was wondering if you’d stay in Washington, D.C. a while longer but I never felt that you were entirely happy with the place. Of course I’m thrilled (and a little jealous) that you’re off to Cuba in January… being on the other side of the world, I don’t know when I will make that dream trip happen. As for the city skyline in the photo, is it somewhere in Pennsylvania?

Thanks, James. I went through various waves in DC: hating it, tolerating it, accepting it, enjoying it, and even looking around to see if we might make it a permanent home at some point. The climate is not wonderful there right now (and I’m not talking weather!) and a new door has opened for us, so we may step through it! Not into Pennsylvania, though, although I kind of wish it were as much of my family is there.

Enjoy Cuba, Lexi, and thanks for the Chicago tips! Am I wrong or that skyline has a certain Texan je-ne-sais-quoi in it?
Here’s to a better 2017!

Thanks, Fabrizio! I assume the threatened BA cabin crew strike will not affect your flights …? Dress warmly – I’m in Chicago now and it’s bone-chillingly cold! On another note, you seem to have a very discerning eye for skylines! 🙂 Speaking of which, enjoy the spectacular architecture here in Chicago; it’s a beautiful city and I hope your trip is fantastic.

It might have, but if it has it’d be for a good cause. You can’t pay that sort of money in London, corporate greed has gone too far. Anyhow, we’ll sure dress warmly 🙂

Good word! What a year well-lived! So many places in different parts of the world. And even more awesome, that you seemed to have managed even there’s so much going and things “in the way” (per se). And then so much more to anticipate and look forward to. Good luck, stay safe, and have fun!

Was delighted to see this delightful and stunning teaser photo entered to New Horizons. Whew! What a year you’ve experienced. Seeing the recap here really brings home the magnitude of it all. I am looking forward to seeing your Cuba images (on my list, never been) and to seeing more images of your new backyard. May your 2017 be full of joy and far less volatile. Your 2016 definitely sounds hairy Lexie, and here’s to a better year for you. We can relate to some of your issues as we’ve had a number of things happen that kept us close to home for most of the year, and that’s a change for us as well. We’ll keep an eye out to see what transpires for your in this year. Have a Happy New Year and all the best for a fun, exciting, and healthy 2017. ~James
